Over the years, we have seen many private companies in Shillong come and go. We often hear stories from our parents about private companies that came to Shillong but were closed down. Our parents warned us to watch out for companies because you can't trust them, they set up, get their short term gains, then shut down.
Such instances have left a bad impression on private companies in Shillong. As a result, parents in Shillong pressure their kids to apply for Government jobs.
However, if these same parents send their kids to seek employment with companies outside our state (Meghalaya), it does not seem to worry them. They have a different perception about private companies located outside of Shillong.
This is a snapshot of a dilemma Chillibreeze continues to encounter.
So how did Chillibreeze sustain itself as a private company in Shillong for more than a decade? How did we change the minds of our people and their families?
Chillibreeze has been in Shillong for 14+ years now. It is the only private company in Shillong that has sustained through the years of the bandh, load shedding, and curfews. AND presently sustaining through the COVID-19 crisis.
Our success is not an accident. We are a conscious company doing things on purpose. One thing we did, was change and enlighten the minds of people in Shillong by holding Family Orientation Programs for each new batch of trainees and newly appointed staff.

These events are a chance for parents to have a first-hand experience of what their child goes through every day at work.
This sounds like something small. It is small but significant. With these sessions, Chillibreeze puts the minds of staff members’ families at ease.
Family members experience the office environment first hand. They hear staff tell real-life stories. The interaction at the family orientation results in the families feeling safe and assured about their child's or spouse's job. The events are a chance for the family to have a first-hand experience of what their child goes through every day at work.
This small gesture from Chillibreeze has proven to be a beneficial first step in making a connection with family and company.
In these orientation sessions, the family members learn everything they need to know about Chillibreeze. How the company runs and the role that their children have in influencing the growth of the company.

“I want my child to be challenged, I want her to see that life is not easy. They had it easy all their lives, now it’s time to work, only when they experience hardship, they will know its value. Thank you for challenging her to be her best”.
These orientation sessions are beneficial for both the company and the employees. We believe that the family is an extension of the support system needed to help each of our employees be successful. Not having support from family members can make it hard for employees. It will jeopardize work as well as relationships at home. These sessions inform families about what the employees need from them for successful work life. The sessions tell them how the success of each individual employee contributes to the company’s success in achieving the mission:

During a conversation, one parent shared,
“Getting clarity on what my child is doing is something new, seeing where he is working and getting the full information about the company is mind changing. I see now that this job is the best fit for him and I don’t want anything else.”
Another parent quoted,
“Seeing all this and hearing what the company had to offer makes me happy. Also, the care the company gives to my daughter's safety lessens my worries. It is very nice you are doing this, it gives us a clear perspective”.
Transforming Lives and Changing a Mindset
Chillibreeze’s work culture has resulted in a change in the mindset of people about private companies in Shillong.
With the rise in unemployment, our choices are limited. We cannot keep depending on the availability of government jobs.
A part of Chillibreeze’s mission is to be a role model. And by being that, Chillibreeze's influence has spread throughout Northeast India and beyond. Now it is 2020 and we are taking this mission and family orientation to our new branch office in Aizawl, Mizoram. Here too, in this region of India, Chillibreeze faces a similar problem. We are changing the mindset one family at a time.
Chillibreeze is transforming lives. Sharing information with family members has resulted in them believing that a well-run private company can flourish in Shillong. Chillibreeze believes that the experience that the family has in the orientation program will influence them to spread the word about Chillibreeze and the benefits that unemployed youths can have, working in such established private companies.
